Celebrating Our School Community's Success: Moving Forward Together

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news with our Hornet community! Like a team that’s been working together toward a shared goal, our schools have achieved significant milestones that deserve recognition and celebration.

Our Elementary School has advanced from Turnaround to Improvement status, and our JRSR High School has moved from Priority Improvement to Improvement. This progress represents the collective efforts of our entire school community – students, families, teachers, staff, and community members.

What This Means for Our Students

These improvements in our Colorado School Performance Framework ratings reflect real growth in student learning and school effectiveness. Think of it like a report card that shows we’re on the right track – we’ve made solid progress and are building momentum for even greater success ahead.

The Heart of Our Success

Our dedicated teachers and support staff have been instrumental in this achievement. Through innovative teaching approaches, personalized attention to student needs, and unwavering commitment to excellence, they’ve created learning environments where students can thrive.

Looking Ahead: Our Continued Journey

While we celebrate these important milestones, we’re keeping our focus on the ultimate goal of reaching Performance level. Just as any successful journey requires both celebrating progress and maintaining forward momentum, we’re committed to continuing our upward trajectory.

How Our Community Can Help

One area where we need continued community support is in assessment participation. When all students participate in state assessments, we get a complete picture of our schools’ effectiveness and can better showcase student growth. We encourage all families to help ensure their students are present and prepared for these important measures.

Moving Forward Together

This success story belongs to our entire Hornet community. By working together – families, educators, students, and community members – we’ve proven that positive change is not only possible but sustainable.

We’re excited about what lies ahead and grateful for the continued partnership of our school community as we work toward even greater achievements.

Sincerely,

Mark McPherson
Superintendent

The Power of Sleep

The Power of Sleep: Why Your Child’s Bedtime Matters More Than You Think

As we work together to support your child’s success this school year, we want to highlight one of the most important—yet often overlooked—factors in academic and personal development: adequate sleep.

How Much Sleep Does Your Child Need?Two-panel illustration showing a child going to sleep and waking up energetically in bed

Research shows that school-aged children require:

  • Ages 6-13: 9-11 hours per night
  • Ages 14-17: 8-10 hours per night

The Amazing Benefits of Proper Sleep

When your child gets enough quality sleep, you’ll likely notice improvements in:

Academic Performance

  • Better concentration and focus during lessons
  • Improved memory consolidation and recall
  • Enhanced problem-solving abilities
  • Higher test scores and grades

Physical Health

  • Stronger immune system (fewer sick days!)
  • Better coordination and motor skills
  • Healthy growth and development
  • Reduced risk of obesity

Emotional Well-being

  • More stable moods throughout the day
  • Better emotional regulation and fewer meltdowns
  • Increased resilience to stress
  • Improved social interactions with peers

Behavioral Benefits

  • Better impulse control
  • Reduced hyperactivity and attention problems
  • More cooperative behavior at home and school
  • Decreased risk-taking behaviors in teens

Quick Tips for Better Sleep

  • Consistent bedtime routine (same time nightly)
  • Screen-free hour before bed
  • Cool, dark, quiet bedroom
  • Daily physical activity

Prioritize sleep as much as homework—your child’s success depends on it!

Did you know?

The Hanover School District 28 is a Colorado Springs-based school district founded on August 12, 1881, serving rural areas of southern El Paso County with a history that includes operating multiple small country schools before Colorado’s transformative School District Reorganization Act of 1949, a pivotal law that reshaped the state’s educational landscape. Before this legislation, El Paso County operated 65 separate school districts, many serving tiny rural communities with one-room schoolhouses. The 1949 act promoted the consolidation of these scattered districts into larger, more efficient systems capable of offering comprehensive education.
