As we approach Labor Day weekend, we want to take a moment to honor and celebrate the hard work, dedication, and contributions of all the families in our community.
This long weekend offers a well-deserved opportunity to rest, reconnect with loved ones, and enjoy the final days of summer. Whether you’re planning a backyard barbecue, a family outing, or simply relaxing at home, we hope you find time to celebrate your accomplishments and recharge for the season ahead.
A Special Thank You to the Hanover Park Board and Hanover Community Church!
We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Hanover Park Board and Hanover Community Church for organizing and running our Back to School Ice Cream Social! It was such a wonderful time and a perfect way to kick off the new school year. The event brought our community together and created lasting memories for families. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication in making this special event happen!
Thank you is just the start. As I prepare to step away from the principal position at Hanover JSHS, I want to discuss what it has meant to be the principal of such a wonderful and caring staff of educators and support team members. I wish everyone had a chance to see our students for the incredible individuals that they are every day when they get off the bus. They work to improve themselves. They strive for something different, something better, and sometimes they don’t even know what that is but they know it is what they need to do. They struggle. They grow. They make mistakes and learn from them. That is real-world!
I have been known to tell our staff, “If we win their hearts, we will win their heads”. When the student believes in themselves, creates positive experiences, and accepts our care and concern for them as a person, then we can start the teaching and learning. During the last four years, I have watched our team of teachers, coaches, sponsors, kitchen staff, paraprofessionals, custodians, administrative assistants, and administrators dedicate and sacrifice time with their own families to be here for our students. They show up early and stay late and do it with little fanfare. Teachers don’t ask for parades or their names on a flashing marquee. What they want is our Hanover families to see and support all children the way we see them- as the young learners who need supportive resources from those who mean the most to them – their family. That’s what we want. For those same people to come alongside and join us in providing positive interactions and opportunities consistently throughout their educational careers. To show up and support their participation in teacher conferences, sporting events, concerts, art shows, and yes, even in their mistakes because that is real-world too!
My deepest gratitude is left to those who I have had the privilege of working with every day at Hanover Junior-Senior High School. I came for the job and leave with a high level of gratefulness and respect for those who contributed to the growth and success of our school, our programs, and most of all, our students. Hanover teachers continue to amaze and humble me with their efforts to ensure a student’s well-being while challenging them to be better, not perfect, just better. Your ability to show up every day with deadlines looming, when you were “under the weather”, and when you were tired after a long week of Homecoming events puts you in my highest regard as the ultimate professionals. So I end the same way I started, by simply and humbly saying, “Thank you.”

Compulsory Attendance
Students between ages 6-17 must attend school regularly. The state requires students to be in attendance for the equivalent of at least 160 days or 1,056 hours per school year.
Attendance Rate Calculation
Schools typically calculate attendance rates by dividing the number of days a student is present by the total number of days the student is enrolled, then multiplying by 100 to get a percentage
Chronic Absenteeism
Colorado tracks chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of enrolled school days for any reason (excused or unexcused). This metric is used in school accountability measures.
Truancy Thresholds
Excused vs. Unexcused Absences
Colorado law specifies what constitutes excused absences, including illness, family emergencies, religious observances, court appearances, and pre-approved educational activities. Schools have some discretion in determining what qualifies as excused.
Reporting Requirements
School districts must report attendance data to the Colorado Department of Education, which uses this information for funding calculations and school performance frameworks.
JSHS will be administering NWEA Testing on Sep. 10 & 11th.
Key Information
The test measures growth, not just achievement. It shows how much your child has learned over time rather than comparing them to grade-level expectations alone. Students take it multiple times per year (typically fall, winter, and spring) to track progress.
Results come as RIT scores (Rasch Units) – think of these like measuring height. Just as a child grows taller over time, their RIT score should increase as they learn more. The score indicates your child’s instructional level regardless of their grade.
What the Scores Mean
Benefits for Your Child Teachers use results to tailor instruction to your child’s specific needs, ensuring they’re challenged appropriately without being overwhelmed. The adaptive nature means testing is less stressful since questions adjust to your child’s ability level.
