Keeping Your Child Healthy and in School!

Wellness

  • Ensure your child visits their health care provider for:
    • A physical once a year.
    • All recommended Immunizations.
    • Chronic health issues such as asthma or diabetes.
  • Visit the dentist twice a year.
  • Try to schedule non-urgent medical appointments outside of school hours.
  • If your child doesn’t have health or dental insurance, reach out to your school’s nurse or social worker or other staff member to help connect you with resources.
  • Complete your school’s annual health form.
  • Agree to allow your child to participate in health and vision screenings offered at school.
  • If your child has a chronic health issue such as asthma, make sure that your child’s health care provider completes appropriate school forms that allow your child to keep/carry any necessary medications at school.
  • If your child has a disability, work closely with the school and your child’s health care provider to ensure appropriate support and services.
  • If your child has a compromised immune system or is at high risk for complications from common illnesses, please talk to your school (school nurse if available) about developing a plan with you and your child’s health-care provider to keep your child healthy and safe while attending school.
  • If you are concerned that your child may have a contagious illness, call your child’s health care provider or school nurse for advice.
  • If your child needs to stay home for a prolonged period due to illness, talk to your child’s teacher to find out about resources they can use at home to keep learning once they feel well enough.

Engagement

  • Make sure your child feels safe and connected at school. Involve them in afterschool activities.
  • If you are worried that your child may be suffering from anxiety, talk with your teacher, the school nurse, social worker or other school staff to discuss the challenge and identify what can help your child. If your child is missing class because of challenges with behavioral issues, contact the school and/or your child’s health care provider for support and resources.
  • Ask the school about health-related policies.
  • Monitor your child’s attendance and academic progress and seek support when needed.

Beyond the Classroom: How Volunteerism Fuels Student Success

When parents and community members volunteer at school, they transform the educational environment from an institution into an extended family, creating powerful conditions for student achievement.

Creating Connection and Belonging Parent and community volunteers bring warmth and personal investment that students feel throughout the school day. When students see familiar neighborhood faces helping in classrooms, libraries, or at events, it sends a clear message: “This community cares about you.” Students feel known, valued, and supported beyond just their teachers.

Boosting Engagement and Pride Students are more likely to participate actively when they see their community invested in school activities. A student whose parent volunteers is more engaged, and when local professionals share their expertise, learning becomes relevant and exciting. The school becomes something students belong to, not just attend.

Enriching Learning Opportunities Community volunteers bring diverse skills and perspectives that enhance education. A retired engineer makes math come alive, while a local artist adds creativity to lessons. Parent volunteers provide additional one-on-one attention, ensuring struggling students get help and advanced learners are challenged.

Building Emotional Security When students see their community actively supporting their education, it builds confidence and self-worth. This network of caring adults provides multiple sources of encouragement and mentorship, helping students develop resilience and understand that their success matters to many people.

Strengthening School Culture Parent and community involvement creates positive momentum. Students take more pride in their school when they see others investing in its success, leading to better behavior, higher attendance, and increased academic effort. The school becomes a source of community pride.

Real-World Relevance Community volunteers help bridge classroom learning with real-world application. Students see how education connects to actual careers and community needs, increasing motivation and engagement with their studies.

The presence of caring adults throughout the school creates an environment where students feel they truly matter. This sense of belonging doesn’t just make school feel like family—it provides the foundation for academic success and lifelong achievement.

Greetings from the Art Room

The art students are currently working on art books, otherwise known as visual journals or junk journals. They are all very involved and excited for this project that will span the entire semester.

Since this is a repurposing and reusing type of project, we are in need of junk! Do you have a collection of craft supplies that will never get used? Or maybe a jar full of buttons? Please consider donating to this exciting art project.

Some examples of what we could use: scrapbook supplies, yarn, beads, bottlecaps, stickers, junk mail, magazines, glitter, greeting cards, one ply cardboard like cereal boxes, and so on.

If you have something unique and are unsure, please reach out to Lisa Smith at [email protected]. Ms. Smith loves the unique things that people collect and store.
